Quinn didn’t blame the cop for being skeptical of his story. Hearing him say it out loud? He was skeptical of it. Of course he’d left things out. How could he explain why he’d contacted Maddie? He’d lived next door to a man who had been murdered, then come here and almost been blown up? So, he’d stepped lightly across the tricky details.

Maddie had come here to help his grandmother with a legal matter, an old legal matter relating to his grandfather. His grandmother had suggested there might be information in the old office. It had clearly been broken into, and he’d realized there was a trip wire and then boom. He hadn’t mentioned the smell of cleaning fluid.

The story was already thin without that.

But he had no right to out Maddie as an author. And none of it made sense to them. How could he make it make sense to this cop who was clearly out of his depth?

“We’ll have to get a team from the Parish Sheriff’s office to go over the scene,” the cop finally said.

“I appreciate you coming out and checking,” Quinn said. He gave the man a bland look. “Do you think my grandmother is safe?”

“Would she have gone in there on her own?” the man asked.

“I’d say no, but if she saw the door ajar, I guess she might have checked it.” Quinn felt a stab of worry at this thought. Had his grandmother been the target? They’d assumed it was them, but if Gammie hadn’t come to find them… “I don’t like it,” he admitted.

“I don’t either. Your Gammie is respected in these parts.”

At least he hadn’t said “feared.”

“She might want to stay with family until we get this sorted out.”

“I’ll make some calls,” Quinn said. “I’ll try to figure out a way to persuade Gammie to do it.”

The cop chuckled. “Good luck with that.”

He didn’t say what they were both thinking. She was a stubborn old bird. She was ninety and probably shouldn’t be living alone, but no one’d had the courage to suggest she move out. Lucky for them, she’d given up driving on her own volition. She’d even sold her car to get rid of the temptation to just run a quick errand.

Of course, her “volition” had been helped when she drove the wrong way down the main street and bumped up on the curb, almost running down the mayor, but as Gammie liked to say, that was just a detail.

He shook hands with the cop and showed him out, watching him walk slowly to his patrol car. He felt for him. He didn’t know what to do next either.

His Gammie cleared her throat behind him, and he spun around. Maddie stood behind her, her gaze worried.

“I need you to collect all the albums, Quinnie. The picture albums,” she added.

What, she thought he’d think she wanted record albums? Did Gammie even have a record player anymore?

“Sure,” he said. He hesitated. “He’s taped off the scene and is going to call a forensic team from the Parish Sheriff’s Office.
